König Ubu - schedule, program & buy tickets

German translation by Marlis and Paul Pörtner

Driven by their lust for power, Ubu the Father and Ubu the Mother murder the King of Poland and seize the crown. As rulers, they govern arbitrarily, impose absurdly ridiculous taxes, and have the people executed. In the war against Russia, they are overthrown and forced to flee. They take up residence in a scientist’s home and wreak havoc in the world of the petty bourgeoisie. Eventually, they are drawn back to France. There they begin a new life—convinced that freedom lies only in slavery.

With the character Ubu, the bohemian Alfred Jarry created a garish satire on power, violence, and ideologies. His vision shattered the conventions of traditional theater. Stefan Bachmann expands the Ubu universe to include the lesser-known plays *UBU THE CUCKOLD* and *UBU IN CHAINS*. Jarry’s “pataphysical world” is turned upside down and becomes a grotesque reflection of our own.
