Young Elisabeth finds herself in a precarious situation: she needs 150 marks to escape a prison sentence. She comes up with the idea of selling her body to the Anatomical Institute for scientific purposes while she is still alive, hoping that this will help her out of her seemingly hopeless situation. Her plan ultimately fails and her burgeoning love for the policeman Alfons Klostermeyer also puts her in trouble. In order to protect their relationship, she doesn't want to mention her previous conviction. The problems get out of hand. In the end, Elisabeth, excluded from society, sees no other way out than to drown herself. Her reason: "Because I have nothing left to eat."

In her production of the 1932 play, director Lucia Bihler takes a look at the hopelessness and helplessness of people in precarious economic situations and embarks on a search for new perspectives for Elisabeth.
