Die gröẞere Hoffnung - schedule, program & buy tickets

Adapted by Therese Willstedt

A girl, alone in wartime: Ellen’s Jewish mother has fled to the U.S., her aunt has disappeared, and her father has left her in the care of her grandmother, who is tired of life. Ellen befriends seven children who wear a star because they have “fake grandparents.” Together they celebrate birthdays without cakes, long for piano music and raspberry ice cream, and play hide-and-seek in the cemetery. They dream of resistance, escape, and love, while violence draws ever closer.
*The Greater Hope*, published in 1948, is Ilse Aichinger’s only novel and has been adapted by Therese Willstedt. It is a war account like no other and recounts her experiences as a persecuted teenager in devastated Vienna.
