With the farce “Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt,” which premiered in 1841, Johann Nestroy achieved one of his greatest successes with audiences: a comedy about love, intrigue, money, and prejudice that is as turbulent as it is full of sharp wit. At the center of the story is the shrewd lawyer Schnoferl, who has a hand in everything when it comes to money and love. But his schemes don’t always pay off—for example, when he meddles in Mrs. von Erbsenstein’s wedding plans or when he tries to advise his client, Mr. von Kauz, on a theft case. On the other hand, he ensures a happy ending between the young Mr. von Gigl and a mysterious embroiderer…

Nestroy’s farce is a witty romantic comedy of errors that lays bare social dependencies and bourgeois double standards. Dominique Schnizer, a proven expert on Nestroy’s universe, will take on this classic. With a keen sense of the original, of pacing, and of subtle depth, he sharpens our focus on Nestroy’s spot-on comedy and on the astonishingly timeless social mechanisms that come to light within it. Der Nino aus Wien is responsible for the music and a new version of the couplets; his unique blend of Viennese folk songs, “Hirschstettner Soul,” and poetic observations of everyday life lends the farce a contemporary sound. He will also appear on stage himself at the Theater in der Josefstadt.
