The king's daughter Salome is tired of the decadence and amorality of her surroundings. She finds an alternative in the chastity of the prophet Jochanaan, imprisoned in a cistern by her stepfather Herod, who captivates her with auratic speeches. Jochanaan's rejection increases her fascination to the point of ecstasy: Salome wants to kiss him. When Herod, whom she hates, promises his stepdaughter everything she could wish for in exchange for a dance, Salome is wildly determined. She agrees, but demands a high price in return: the prophet's head.
Luc Bondy's timeless production is a directorial classic of the late 20th century: after its premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 1992, it was hailed by critics as a "highly sublime family chamber play" that "makes this work itself the hero" and was described as "Richard Strauss as a psychological thriller", and was later shown at the Royal Opera House in London, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and La Scala in Milan, among others. In 2023, it celebrated its Vienna premiere at the Volksoper in a staged production by Marie-Louise Bischofberger-Bondy and will now be performed again.
