DRAMMA PER MUSICA IN THREE ACTS
LIBRETTO AFTER CARLO SIGISMONDO CAPECE
"I have never heard better music in my life," reported an eyewitness to the premiere of George Frideric Handel's Orlando. The story of the knight who loses his mind over his love for Princess Angelica comes from the epic poem Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. But it is Handel's music that turns the medieval epic into a drama of human passions, in which the question of the relationship between reason, emotion and passion in man is examined. Far from baroque operatic conventions, Orlando, Princess Angelica and her lover Medoro live through a drama of self-discovery, the climax of which is Orlando's scene of madness, which is also musically extraordinary. The singer and conductor Raffaele Pe and his ensemble La Lira di Orfeo bring this drama to the MusikTheater an der Wien in concert, singing the title role himself.
