AZIONE TRAGICA IN TWO ACTS
LIBRETTO BY ANDREA LEONE TOTTOLA
The Trojan War began with the desire aroused by the beautiful Helen. Ten years later, the war is over and Helena's daughter Ermione has grown into a young woman. Now it is her beauty and her desire that are the cause of new battles. Abandoned by her lover Pirro, she commits a gruesome murder in her quest for revenge. First performed in Naples in 1819, Ermione is one of Gioachino Rossini's most innovative serious operas and can now be experienced in Vienna for the first time. Four of the main roles struggle with the problem of unrequited love - a monstrosity that broke the rules of operatic convention at the time. With its bold narrative power and exorbitant demands on the singers, the work proved to be downright experimental for the time on the eve of the bel canto era. The dramatic coloratura soprano Anastasia Bartoli, who has already celebrated a triumphant success in the prima donna assoluta role of Ermione at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, can be heard in the leading role.
