Così fan tutte

Dramma giocoso by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte

In Italian with German and English surtitles

The young officers Guglielmo and Ferrando brag to their older friend Don Alfonso about the fidelity of their lovers. Don Alfonso, however, considers all women to be unpredictable in love. The two officers agree to a wager to put their fiancés to the test and pretend they have been ordered to the front. They return as foreign aristocrats, but fail to tempt their lovers into a fling. They think they have already won the bet, but Don Alfonso thinks this is premature.

The title means "This is how all women do it" or "The School of Lovers". Director Lotte de Beer, who is staging the work with stage design by Richard Peduzzi, says: "This piece should really be called Così fan tutti. All the characters are partly responsible for the bitter comedy we experience here. That's why it's less a school for lovers and more an apt study of humanity. There's always something unbelievable about them. Unless, of course, the disguises represent the world in which the characters live. Perhaps the whole Così is set in a world of clowns. And if that's the case, then the question is: will the couples be able to maintain this clown world to the end?"
