Chicago, 1920s: Roxie Hart kills her lover and ends up in prison, where she not only meets the ambitious double murderer Velma Kelly, but also "Mama" Morton, who knows perfectly how to play the keyboard of power, intrigue and glamor. With the help of lawyer Billy Flynn and tabloid journalist Mary Sunshine, Roxie is turned into a media icon. Roxie's star shines unstoppably, were it not for Velma, who finds herself robbed of her well-deserved fame ... And the next scandal is just around the corner.
After more than 50 years, Chicago is still one of the iconic Broadway musicals that combines everything that makes this genre so fascinating: a story about fame, ambition and the temptations of the showbiz world, with world-famous songs - above all "All That Jazz" - and rousing dancing. Director Lotte de Beer, who brings the piece to the stage together with Cuban-born, award-winning choreographer Arielle Smith, calls Chicago an example of "Brechtian storytelling that shows how much we love to be entertained by stories that tell us about the evil of humanity. We allow ourselves to be seduced, enthralled by music and jazz and dance - and in the next moment actually stumble over a corpse."
