Experience *Don Giovanni* Up Close
What remains of an opera when elaborate sets and costumes are set aside? In the case of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” above all, what truly matters in musical theater: people, their relationships, their longings, and their contradictions. With this semi-staged performance, Opera Verace presents a concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus that combines artistic immediacy with the promotion of young opera singers at the start of their international careers.
The project offers the artists the opportunity to showcase their talents in a professional setting and to develop their own interpretations of Mozart’s characters. At the same time, it introduces the audience to a new generation of opera artists.
“Semi-staged” here means that this reduction creates space for what is essential: the characters and their stories. The performers’ personalities thus come directly to the forefront. Their individual interpretations, the dynamics of their relationships, and the emotional power of the music become the center of the action.
The concert relies on the impact of the music and the expressive power of the artists. This creates a special closeness between the stage and the audience—not least because the orchestra is seated on stage and functions as part of the overall concept.
An abridged version has been developed for this concert evening, taking into account the specific requirements of the concert format. It offers a focused approach to Mozart’s work without losing sight of its dramatic power. Surtitles in German and English are part of the stage action and help bring the characters even closer to the audience in all their authenticity.
In this way, *Don Giovanni* combines musical quality, a focus on the essentials, and the promotion of talent. The focus is on the music, the people on stage, and the invitation to experience Mozart’s masterpiece in a direct and very lively way.
