Masterpieces for Two invites the audience on a multifaceted journey through the history of dance. In five outstanding duets, the dancers explore different forms of closeness, relationship and distance and present masterpieces by important choreographers, each of which opens up their own emotional and thematic spaces.
Created in 1911 by Michel Fokine, Le Spectre de la Rose tells the story of a young woman in whose dream the ghost of a rose appears. Maurice Béjart created an iconic duet for two dancers to Gustav Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. In Béjart's choreography, states of mind, be it longing, loneliness or farewell, find expression through the bodies of the two dancers. Angelin Preljocaj's Annonciation is one of the most famous works by the French choreographer, who not only combines sacred music with electronic sounds in his creation, but also reinterprets the biblical Annunciation to Mary. Variations Pour une Porte et un shows George Balanchine - inspired by Pierre Henry's score, whose sounds imagine human sighs and the opening and closing of doors - at his most experimental. The final piece is Jerome Robbins' interpretation of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. A subtle and sensual encounter between a dancer and a dancer unfolds in the reduced atmosphere of a ballet studio.
