"Two souls dwell, alas, in my breast" is one of the most famous lines from Goethe's "Faust". This is not only the best possible description of an inner conflict, but can also be read as an indication that Faust and Mephisto can be understood as two sides of one and the same person: Two principles that sometimes unite and sometimes oppose each other. On the one hand, Faust, the researcher, who suffers from the overly narrow limits of science and would like to be a god who can recreate people and, not least, himself; on the other hand, Mephisto, the gambler and trickster, who has mastered the craft of deception and comes across as the personified license to transgress boundaries.
