Melodrama in three acts - libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica based on the drama "La Tosca" by Victorien Sardou - semi-staged performance
A political thriller full of suspense from the first to the last bar: a painter, a famous singer and the powerful chief of police in Rome drive each other passionately through a thicket of love, faith, betrayal and murder.
The singer Tosca loves the painter Cavaradossi, who has helped the former republican consul Angelotti to escape and thus made an enemy of the powerful and sadistic police chief Scarpia. To save Cavaradossi, Scarpia confronts the singer Tosca with an impossible decision - she goes above and beyond, but Scarpia is the more skillful schemer...
Inspired by Victorien Sardou's successful drama of the same name, Puccini created a masterpiece that captivates both psychologically and musically with the complexity of its characters. Hardly any other opera is as scenically composed as Puccini's "Tosca". Typical of the verismo style, instead of mythological figures or courtly love stories, the focus is on real settings, everyday milieus and human abysses.
In the semi-staged version in the Grosses Festspielhaus, the illustrator Thomas Wizany creates images to Puccini's sounds that creatively enrich the musical delights and stimulate the audience's imagination in an intense way.
