Dramma giocoso in two acts - libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte
Murder, seduction, revenge and punishment - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni" has all the ingredients for a multifaceted and profound operatic experience. Together with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart created one of the most famous operatic works in today's repertoire. Elements of comedy and tragedy are combined in the "dramma giocoso" about the notorious womanizer Don Giovanni. He leaves a trail of destruction in the lives of the women he meets, including Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and his fiancée Zerlina. Donna Anna swears revenge for the death of her father, whom Giovanni murders at the beginning of the opera, while Donna Elvira repeatedly wavers between love and hate.
Questions of morality, the power of seduction and the inevitable punishment for misconduct are central themes throughout the work. In this opera, Mozart succeeds in portraying the characters' emotions in a deep and nuanced way: Donna Anna's desire for revenge, Donna Elvira's turmoil between love and anger and Zerlina's uncertainty between seductiveness and fidelity. At the end of the opera, the moral of the story is manifested in a very special way.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed "Don Giovanni" as the third of the "Da Ponte operas", i.e. with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera was commissioned by the Prague nobility and was finally premiered in Prague in 1787. Despite the time pressure under which Mozart composed it, he created a work that ideally combines drama and humor and which is still an integral part of opera literature today.
Alexandra Liedtke has been with the Salzburg State Theatre for over ten years now and her productions ensure lively evenings of drama and opera.
