This ballet evening takes us thematically to the Iberian Peninsula. For the first time in the main house, three different choreographic styles will be presented in one evening and our ballet ensemble will have the opportunity to demonstrate its full diversity of dance and interpretative range.
With the catchy melodies of Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", composer Rodion Shchedrin wrote a ballet for string orchestra and percussion for prima ballerina Maya Plissetskaya, which - as he said - "should always sound a few degrees hotter than the opera." Valentina Turcu's choreography focuses on the protagonist's emotional contradictions.
The ballet evening centers on Reginaldo Oliveira's ballet "Rosa" as an approach to Spanish pop combined with modern flamenco. It follows the trail of pop legend Rosalía and her unusual interpretation of this passionate music. After the chief choreographer paid homage to Latin American esprit with great success in "Frida's World", this time he will create a rousing choreography inspired by Spanish rhythms and pop music.
The Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein commissioned "Boléro" from Maurice Ravel in 1928. Bronislawa Nijinska, the sister of the legendary dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, provided the choreography and together they premiered the work at the Paris Opera. Rubinstein danced on a table, surrounded by 20 men, whose lascivious movements increased with the crescendo of the music until the tension was released orgiastically in the final chord - a scandal at the time!
The award-winning Croatian choreographer and director Valentina Turcu is one of the most internationally respected specialists for narrative action pieces and received her artistic training from Maurice Béjart. Yonggeol Kim danced at the Paris Opera Ballet and is now celebrating great success as a choreographer in his native Korea.
Reginaldo Oliveira has already shown many facets of his choreographic work in his role as chief choreographer for the Salzburg State Theater. With "Rosa", following "Tanto...Tango!" and "Frida's World", he pays homage to the spirited rhythms of the Iberian Peninsula combined with the modern interpretation of the Spanish artist Rosalía.
Introductions to the works take place 45 and 30 minutes before the start of each performance.
