The NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, based in Dresden's Polish twin city of Wrocław, brings a large portion of Mediterranean flair to the Elbe with its concert. The lively ensemble and its artistic director, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, have four works, mainly by Italian composers, in their luggage. A work by Wojciech Kilar, who is best known for his music for Hollywood classics such as "The Pianist" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula", will serve as a calling card from his homeland. His piece "Orawa", composed in 1986, is inspired by the folklore of the Polish mountain regions and has a reduced, meditative form. Giuseppe Verdi's String Quartet, premiered in 1873, combines his dramatic theatrical genius with the strict form of the genre in a fascinating way. Niccolò Paganini once caused a sensation with his variations on a theme from Rossini's "Moses in Egypt", played exclusively on the G string. His famous "Cantabile" in D major and Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence", which captures the Italian lightness and dolce vita in an inimitable way, round off this sonorous musical journey.
