Theater an der Wien - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Theater an der Wien
The Theater an der Wien is not just any theater, but the house that Emanuel Schikaneder, versatile genius, actor, organizational talent and, above all, librettist of The Magic Flute, had built in Vienna in 1801 in the spirit of Mozart.
Since January 2006, with the anniversary celebrations for Mozart's 250th birthday, the Theater an der Wien has presented itself as the new opera house of the city of Vienna. This makes it Vienna's youngest and oldest opera house. As a year-round stagione opera house, the Theater an der Wien opens up a new, independent category in Vienna's sophisticated cultural scene. Twelve months a year - with a premiere every month - opera is performed in the Stagione system: this means a constant cast from the first to the last performance and thus continuous quality at the highest international level.
The modern, open approach to music theater through the program, cast and artists is emphasized by the house itself, its architecture and lively location. The ambience and materials, intimate atmosphere and ideal acoustics in the historic theater encourage people to open their senses to the beautiful. The Theater an der Wien consciously establishes a reciprocal relationship with its lively surroundings on the Naschmarkt and the young cultural scene around the Schleifmühlviertel.
