What to do when the state of Pontevedro is on the verge of bankruptcy? Fortunately, Baron Zeta has the idea that saves the day: Count Danilo, his work-shy but erotically active secretary, is to marry the rich widow Hanna Glawari, who has just arrived in Paris. However, Danilo finds himself in fierce competition - and when he recognizes his former love in the millionaire widow, he swears never to confess his love to her ...
Franz Lehár (1870-1948) hit the nerve of his time with The Merry Widow, which premiered in Vienna in 1905 and is still one of the most popular and most frequently performed operettas today. Based on a play by Henri Meilhac, Victor Léon and Leo Stein created an amusing battle of the sexes between irony and melancholy, lightness and emotional depth. Lehár's music combines rousing dances from polka to cakewalk and unforgettable catchy tunes such as the Vilja song, "Da geh' ich ins Maxim" or "Lippen schweigen". The Merry Widow thus becomes a timeless mirror of human longings, full of charm, wit and joie de vivre.
