Comedy for music in three acts
Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal
In German with German and English surtitles
A worldwide success that originated in Dresden: The world premiere of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier took place in the Semperoper in January 1911. Richard Strauss and his librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal combined a lavish portrait of rococo and a melancholy piece about the transience of this period to create an ingenious "comedy for music". - The married field marshal finds her youth again in her love for the younger Octavian. But she painfully realizes that the passage of time cannot be stopped.
When Octavian is asked to deliver the silver rose to the dowry hunter Ochs auf Lerchenau, the unstoppable happens: the suitor and the bride fall in love. Octavian uses a comedic masquerade to eliminate his employer, and the Field Marshal releases Octavian: "I have vowed to love him in the right way" ... Uwe Erik Laufenberg has staged Der Rosenkavalier as a modern homage to the Dresden premiere.
