From the subtle harmonies of the Renaissance to the lively sound currents of our time - this concert evening at the Kulturpalast celebrates the diversity and radiance of English music through the centuries. The exceptional cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason shines as the soloist. The Englishman has long since conquered a firm place in the Olympus of cellists and can now be heard in the European premiere of Edmund Finnis' Cello Concerto. In it, the composer, who was born in Oxford in 1984, unfolds the full colorful splendor of the cello. The evening opens with Finnis' "Hymn", in which the spiritual depth of the 16th century and a contemporary tonal language combine to create a fascinating journey between light and shadow. Early English Baroque also unfolds its magic on this evening: in William Lawes' "The Sunrise", the music rises like a warming morning sun. Finally, Sir Arthur Bliss' "Colour Symphony", in which colors become tones: A symphonic masterpiece that artfully interweaves musical and visual impressions.
