Everything about the first of the London Philharmonic Orchestra's two guest appearances at the Kulturpalast is very British, and that at its finest: in Nicola Benedetti, the British orchestra and its chief conductor Edward Gardner are not only bringing one of the most sought-after violinists and most influential artists of our time from the United Kingdom to Dresden. The program also comes from the island: the late Romantic composer Edward Elgar, considered the greatest English composer after Henry Purcell, who died in 1695, wrote his violin concerto at the suggestion of Fritz Kreisler, who is said to have said when looking at the draft score: "I will make the Queen's Hall tremble with this." Elgar's First Symphony, premiered two years earlier in Manchester by the Hallé Orchestra under the direction of the dedicatee Hans Richter, was received just as euphorically by the public and was described in the press as "the finest thing ever put on paper by an English composer".
