Two works of the late Romantic period between the image of the Orient and the Russian soul: a musical approach to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's idea of a West-East dialog. Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his 5th Piano Concerto during a stay in Egypt. Exotic colors and rhythmic echoes of North African music are mixed into the classical concerto form - a travel diary in sound. Sergei Rachmaninov's Second, on the other hand, leads us into the vast landscapes of Russian Romanticism. After the failure of his First, its successor marked a triumphant new beginning. Its melodic arches and lush orchestral palette combine passionate intimacy with a wide-ranging dramaturgy.
Sergei Rachmaninov:
Symphony No. 2
"From the very beginning, you are immersed in Rachmaninov's melancholy and drama and at the same time feel safe in the warmth of the dense symphonic sound. The music is characterized by virtuosically interwoven and intense, highly romantic symphonic music - at times voluptuous and songful, at times dance-like and pulsating and always rousing, so that you can fly through this work in concert with ease. A special moment occurs in the middle of the second movement, when the 2nd violins introduce an explosive fugue theme out of nowhere in 'forte molto marcato', which is then gradually taken up and developed further by the other instrumental groups."
Johanne Klein
Member of the 2nd violins
