Johannes Brahms

"Nänie" op. 82
Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98

Performers
Herbert Blomstedt Conductor
Saxon State Opera Choir Dresden

The memorial concert on February 13th commemorates the destruction of Dresden in 1945. Johannes Brahms' "Nänie", a setting of Schiller's famous lament about the transience of beauty, opens the evening in silent mourning. The 4th Symphony is one of Brahms' most haunting compositions. It is characterized by austere grandeur and strict form, its finale unfolds as a monumental passacaglia. It has a special history in Dresden: the work was performed here for the first time on March 10, 1886 - under the direction of the composer. Herbert Blomstedt, honorary conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle, is now on the podium, returning to this traditional concert at the age of 99.

Johannes Brahms:
Symphony No. 4

"For me, Johannes Brahms' Fourth Symphony is like a reminder of life: of happiness and sadness, of love and loneliness, of despair and hope. I became a musician because of the expressive power of this music."

Rozália Szabó
Solo flutist
