Nathalie Stutzmann is one of the most distinctive musical personalities of our time. She first gained international fame as an alto before turning to conducting. The evening's program revolves around the motif of fate: Giuseppe Verdi's overture to "La forza del destino" opens with dramatic force. Sergei Rachmaninov's "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" unfolds a virtuoso game of variations, the famous 18th variation of which is one of the composer's most intimate inspirations. The finale is Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Fourth: personal conflicts and existential unrest drive the work forward and lend it a dramatic, often relentless tension.

Sergei Rachmaninov:
Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini

"For me, it is always something special when the work we are playing was written in Dresden. Rachmaninov lived here from 1906 to 1909 with his wife and daughters in a rented apartment in the Südstadt district. His escape from political events in Russia and the creative crisis triggered by his probably unsuccessful First Symphony led to this change of location. In the third movement in particular, I feel that Rachmaninov develops the incredible warmth and generosity that we also know from his Second Piano Concerto. He has clearly found himself again in Dresden
found himself again and gained new self-confidence."

Lukas Stepp
Concertmaster of the 2nd violins
