Burg Gars - La Bohème

Opera in the Castle Ruins: Stunning acoustics and an enchanting atmosphere—the perfect venue for high-quality opera productions.

Over the past 32 years, more than 400,000 visitors have attended the opera festival at the Babenberg castle ruins in Gars am Kamp. Each summer season, the festival centers on a selected opera. The grandstand, which was redesigned in recent years and features over 1,250 seats, offers the best possible view from every seat.

Gars is one of Austria’s oldest castle complexes. Built in the 11th century, it still retains the style of the old rampart castles. There are no detailed records regarding its exact origins. What is known is that the Babenberg dynasty established one of its seats in Gars, although the “Gars Babenberg era” lasted only a few decades, as castellans were already appointed under Leopold III to administer the castle.
