Isolation and loneliness have become part of our collective experience, at least since the COVID-19 pandemic. Violetta, the young high-class courtesan, must endure them on her deathbed because she is forced by societal moral codes to reject her lover. Verdi’s only opera set in the bourgeois world of his time exposes the double standards of a society that first fawns over a young woman and then casts her aside. Götz Friedrich’s production heightens the emotional intensity of Verdi’s music by telling Violetta’s story as a flashback: the foreboding of death is present from the very beginning and hovers like a shadow over the Parisian party. Thus unfolds a timeless drama with the character of a requiem. We eagerly await the Violetta debut of Federica Lombardi, a fan favorite at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She will later be succeeded by Martina Russomanno, who will join our ensemble starting in the 26/27 season. Michele Spotti, our new Principal Guest Conductor, promises a mature musical interpretation.
