Der einsame Weg

This piece is the autumn of a youth. Autumn of a connoisseur who is sad (not at all, because the sin life was a wrong, but because it comes to an end).
This piece is the Ash Wednesday after a beautiful, actually earlier melancholy carnival: lamenting the soul; Renounce; Older; Guilt; Lonliness; sinking covers.
Something grief stretches over the proceedings. A grief that will not always be safe in the times run against a smiling contemplation. Today it is: by virtue of the particular sweetness of this poet, whom we, the contemporaries, love, perhaps because in some of his works he has said in a low voice something that we, the present, only now, feel so dawning in us. A half-stroke; a sliding shadow, a streaming scent, a second-dream ... And when the breath is no longer felt, the sweetness no longer tasted, the sliding shadow no longer visible: then the people who are coming may laugh.
Alfred Kerr

Mateja Koležnik, last at the Josefstadt responsible for the nestroypreisnominierte successful production The Wild Duck by Henrik Ibsen, sets Schnitzler's fine-melancholic masterpiece in scene.
In an atmosphere marked by the lifestyle of Fin de Siècle, Schnitzler describes a society that was open to the world in youth days. But the dreams and hopes have been absorbed in a sober life balance, the joys of yesteryear become shadows of the past.
