Komplizen

A light-flooded, modernist villa on the sunny side of Vienna, full of people with whom life was not meant badly. Scholars and industrialists, actresses and filmmakers, therapists and lawyers, business executives and investors—they orbit themselves and each other in their small orbits, piling up financial and emotional debt and concocting plans to save humanity or their own little misfortune.

To do this, they have surrounded themselves with service providers whose main task is to keep life at a distance as much as possible. “Outside”, the spreading pandemic is not only claiming deaths in intensive care units, but increasingly also social victims. There are layoffs and closures, a labor dispute escalates, and cars are already on fire in the Ring. Meanwhile, uneasiness creeps up the million-dollar hill, paying ghostly visits to the heirs of the sun night after night. As if under the microscope of a cell researcher, the life of these people disintegrates - and their ideas, inspirations, ideals reveal themselves as part of their complicity with the existing. Maxim Gorky's plays CHILDREN OF THE SUN and ENEMIES, created in the context of the Russian Revolution of 1905, deal with the cholera riots in Saratov at the end of the 19th century on the one hand and the strike in the textile factory of a liberal businessman and patron on the other. Based on both dramas, Simon Stone has written a life-filled play about the social upheavals of our time for the Burgtheater ensemble.
