Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald

The middle breaks off. The security, the promise of advancement, the self-confidence, the ambitions in the "middle of society" are dwindling, the radicalization is increasing. "Relegation society" is the sign of the times. At the beginning of the 1930s in Vienna, Marianne, the daughter of the magician king, who can only keep up his joke article business with difficulty, is to be married to the butcher Oskar, who is still doing comparatively well. She escapes from the merger and falls in love with Alfred, the speculator who used to let tobacconist Valerie's money "work" for him on the racetracks of Europe. He is not suitable to be the father of their child and so Marianne tries to achieve economic independence as a nude dancer in a variety show. But there is no place in this world where she could make a living with her illegitimate child. And so the murder of the infant appears as a collective act intended to close off and protect the small society of the “quiet street in the eighth district” from the future. It is the senseless sacrifice of a society that has nothing to counter its dissolution at the transition to fascism.
