FOR PRODUCTION

He was the teacher of Farinelli and the rival of Handel and Hate. As one of the most dazzling figures of musical baroque, Nicola Porpora has given decisive impulses to the development of opera in the first half of the 18th century. He worked in Italy - especially in his native Naples - but also in London, Dresden and Vienna, although not always with great fairness to his composer colleagues, but always mindful of the development of elemental musical beauties. He knew how to handle vocals, both in terms of her training and effective use. At the beginning of 1735 he wrote for the Opera of the Nobility, which had been built as a rival to Handel's opera empire in the British metropolis, the Opera seria Polifemo, which was premiered with Farinelli in the role of Aci.

The libretto by Paolo Rolli is based on two well-known Greek myths, both of which are related to the Cyclops Polyphemus: the story of the nymph Galateia and the shepherd Akis, as well as the encounter with Ulysses, which does not favor the one-eyed giant. Porpora created for the multi-colored scenes a music of great expressiveness and virtuosity, which did not miss their impact on the contemporary audience.
