FOR PRODUCTION

Opera and oratorio - in the early and mid-18th centuries, the boundaries between the two particularly representative genres were often fluid. There were only a limited number of aesthetic differences, as one would expect both virtuoso and cantabile arias, plastic recitatives and catchy instrumental movements here and there. In Vienna, this was no different than in Italy, where many of those composers came from, who found employment and gained fame north of the Alps. Among them is Antonio Caldara, who served as vice-Kapellmeister at the Viennese court from 1716 onwards, where he developed an immensely productive compositional activity comprising around 80 operas, more than 40 oratorios and numerous church music works. The reputation of the Habsburg residence as a leading European music city was significantly strengthened by Caldara.

La morte d'Abel, written on a text by the famous Pietro Metastasio and for the castrato Farinelli, first appeared in the Viennese court orchestra in April 1732. The libretto follows the biblical account: The shepherd Abel is killed by his brother, the cultivator Cain, because he feels disadvantaged in the favor of God - his revenge will be no better Lord than to go to the extreme. Kain must henceforth live with his grave guilt, a warning example for the later born.
