The Pontifical Choir of the Sistine Chapel is one of the oldest, most famous and at the same time most exclusive musical ensembles in the world: it stands for breathtaking vocal polyphony with a unique sacred aura, a cappella performed after centuries of practice - and was associated for a long time with the incomparable sound of castrato voices.
Once excommunication was the crime of smuggling the notes of Gregorio Allegri's double-choir Miserere from the Vatican - until the 14-year-old Mozart could write down the legendary piece from memory after listening. But to this day, only this choir can invoke Allegri's manuscript and also masters the traditional improvisational art that brings the music of the Renaissance to life and at the same time takes us back to the sixteenth century: with works that have often been created especially for the Sistine Chapel and their manuscripts without exception being kept in the collections of the Vatican Apostolic Library.
Palestrina is the backbone of this unique evening, which follows the liturgical year: from Advent through Christmas, Lent and Holy Week lead to Easter and Pentecost, ending in the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.
