A life for love: Beautiful Manon is actually on her way to the convent when she falls in love with young Chevalier Des Grieux and flees with him to Paris. Here in the exciting City of Love they are planning to live a life of ease. But the limited financial resources of Des Grieux soon cause frustration and the splendid luxury that Monsieur de Brétigny could offer Manon seems so appealing to the young girl that she eventually agrees to be parted from her lover by Brétigny.

Manon learns that Des Grieux is about to become a priest – has he forgotten her? She finds him and they rekindle their love. But Manon’s taste for luxury leads them to ruin and she persuades her lover to start gambling. Following an unusual streak of luck, Manon and Des Grieux are accused of cheating; Manon is convicted. Des Grieux uses his last money to arrange a final meeting with Manon, who has fallen ill in prison. She asks her lover to forgive her and dies in his arms.

The French opera premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1884 and transformed its own genre: the spoken dialogue between the musical numbers, a typical feature of the opéra comique, is supplanted by Massenet’s imaginative use of various techniques of melodramatic composition, linking the individual numbers and turning the opera into a fully composed piece.

Abbé Prévost’s “Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut” inspired French composer Jules Massenet (1842–1912) to craft a masterpiece of French opera literature, with melodies and harmonies that delicately trace the characters’ emotions. Recurring musical motifs create a dense internal structure, enabling the audience to identify with the characters in the key moments of the plot.

Adrian Kelly already demonstrated his excellent instincts for Jules Massenet’s sensitive operas with “Werther” in the 2012/2013 season. Director Christiane Lutz has received much recognition for her opera productions at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Theater an der Wien and the Semperoper in Dresden, among other venues. She brings her trusted team of stage designer Julia Müer and costume designer Dorothee Joisten to Salzburg.
