“Il matrimonio per concorso” – marriage by newspaper ad? To economically minded Don Pomponio, this does not seem like such a bad idea, especially since he does not like leaving anything to chance, least of all the choice of his future son-in-law! This is why the newly rich merchant from Naples places an ad in the newspaper La Gazzetta to find a suitable spouse for his daughter Lisette in Paris. But Lisette loves Filippo, the keeper of the inn where they are staying. Other characters in this light-hearted comedy of mistaken identities include Anselmo and his daughter Doralice, betrothed to Monsù Traversen, traveller Alberto, who is looking for Lisette, the girl from the ad, but falls in love with Doralice, whom he mistakes for Lisette, and pretentious Madame La Rose. Namesakes, disguises and a masquerade ball lead to enormous confusion, jealousy, heartache – and finally to a happy ending.
Young Gioachino Rossini was inspired by Goldoni’s comedy “Il matrimonio per concorso” to compose his energetic early work “La Gazzetta” – described as a dramma per musica but in fact a true opera buffa – which presents a humorous take on the influence of newspaper and media on the lives of people. In times of new socially accepted practices like online dating and choosing dates by swiping, Rossini’s work develops a fresh contemporary relevance.
Rossini’s opera “La Gazzetta” is a real treasure trove of musical material, which the bel canto composer also used for other works: some numbers had already been heard in “Il turco in Italia” (1814) and many a motif recurs in later operas. Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) even recycled the overture of “La Gazzetta” for his masterpiece “La Cenerentola”!
The Mozarteum Orchestra is conducted by its chief conductor Riccardo Minasi, who will unveil the magic of this rarely performed work in an Austrian premiere with the opera ensemble of the Salzburg State Theatre. Alexandra Liedtke had her successful opera debut at the Salzburg State Theatre with “The Tales of Hoffmann” in the 2017/2018 season. She has also directed operas at the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera.
