Hamlet - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Hamlet

The King of Denmark is dead. Claudius, his brother, was only very quick to marry the widowed Queen Gertrude and even to own the King's throne. Since then, a ghost has gone to Elsinore Castle, which does justice to the enforced king. He has a message for the young prince and heir Hamlet: It was murder.

Hamlet pretends to be insane to clarify the background of this crime. With the help of the theatres he wants to expose the perpetrators: The performance of a particular group of actors is to confront the fratricide Claudius with his own act. When another unfortunate thing comes together: At the court it is disguised that the cause of Hamlet's madness is his unfulfilled love for Ophelia Liegendes, the beautiful daughter of the chamberlain Polonius - a deadly misunderstanding that ultimately costs more lives ...

Shakespeare's most famous work, written in 1601-1602, is one of the most-performed dramas of world literature and has set the following tasks: the downfall of an incapacitated ruler or political power struggle over the succession to the throne? Revenge tragedy, state or family tragedy? Is the melancholy Prince Hamlet similar to Oedipus, or rather to the mother murderer Orestes? And how innocent is Gertrud, the queen, really at the event?

The Hamlet is embedded in a dark fabric of entanglements, in family and social power structures that make a guiltless, self-determined existence impossible. The mix of crime and love story and philosophical treatise on the meaning and value of life has made this versatile play of Shakespeare (1564-1616) a key work of modern times.

A successful team is slowly starting: Alexandra Liedtke has her "Don Carlos" team around her, when she first staged Shakespeare in Salzburg this year: She has already worked with stage designer Raimund Orfeo on several productions. Johanna Lakner also created the costumes for "Hoffmann's Tales" after "Don Carlos". Karsten Riedel is a congenial partner as a composer and live musician.
