What is one of the biggest possible taboo breaks in times of Instagram, body cult and self-expression? Simple: ugliness. And of it the main character of Edmond Rostand's most famous piece can sing a song, or at least declaim a lot of verses. Cyrano de Bergerac is eloquent, charismatic, sharp-tongued, imaginative, an outstanding poet, fighter, and actor - but he is also fake. Or at least that's how he feels it; especially his large (rocky, bergspitzen-, landzungen-, half-island!) nose makes him thereby to create, and behind his daredevil façade hides the conviction that he can never be loved because of its appearance. He regards his love for the beautiful Roxane from the outset as hopeless, especially since she has fallen in love with the attractive Christian. Unfortunately, this is anything but witty, and Cyrano offers his help: he himself will be the brain behind Christian's beautiful head. So Cyrano supports the young couple with mental powers, writes love letter to love letter - until Roxane finally loves much more "Christian" moving words than his appearance ...

Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) took the historical figure Hector Savinien de Cyrano as the model, eccentric author of two proto-science-fiction novels and precursors of the Enlightenment. "Cyrano de Bergerac" celebrated its first performance in 1897 a huge success and is still considered today as one of the best and best-known pieces in French drama history, because it raises the central question in the theater: What lies behind the mask?
