New production of the Theater an der Wien in the chamber opera

The Apollonian singer Orpheus lost his beloved wife Eurydice to the bite of a poisonous snake. In a cypress grove, shepherds and nymphs mourn this early death with him and decorate Eurydice's grave with flowers. The winds carry Orpheus ’lamentations to the gods who so cruelly stole his beloved from him. Orpheus is not ready to submit to the fate that has been imposed on him and wants to go to the underworld to look for Eurydice. Then Cupid appears and announces to him what Jupiter, touched by his pain, has decided: The singer is really allowed to descend into the underworld. Should he succeed with his singing to calm the furies and monsters of Hades, Eurydice will be returned to him. However, he is not allowed to look at Eurydice before they have crossed the Styx, and neither can he reveal Jupiter's command. Delighted, Orpheus set off for the underworld under Cupid's admonitions. There furies and guards harass him and want to deny him access to Hades. But Orpheus succeeds in appeasing them with a poignant lament pleading for mercy. The way to the Elysium, to the realms of the blessed, is opened for him, where Eurydice is brought to him by the shy spirits. Together they make their way to the upper world through the labyrinthine corridors of Hades. Troubled by Orpheus ’averted gaze, however, Eurydice doubts whether it is really her husband that she is following through the dark gaps. She presses him with questions and reproaches and begins to doubt his love, as she cannot explain his dismissive, hurry-like behavior. Fearful, Eurydice would rather die again and return to the tranquility of the Elysium than start a new, joyless life unloved. In desperation, Orpheus breaks the commandment imposed on him and turns to Eurydice, who sinks dead into his arms. Orpheus wants to take his own life in pain, which Cupid prevents. Ashamed of the greatness of this love, he brings Eurydice back to life. Happily united, the couple pays homage to the god of love
