New production of the Theater an der Wien in the Kammeroper

The fortune goddess Fortuna promises the peasant Giustino honor, fame and fortune, should he dare to go out into the world. He follows this promise and, because he protects a young woman from a bear, gets to Byzantium, where Emperor Anastasio reigns. It turns out that Giustino has saved the Emperor's sister, Leocasta, who also falls in love with her savior. But the emperor also needs help, because he is threatened by his general Amanzio, who himself would like to become emperor, and by the ruling in Asia Minor tyrant Vitaliano. His wife Arianna has just been kidnapped by Vitaliano. Giustino is chosen to take off with Anastasio, to free the Empress. Arianna, captured by Vitaliano, refuses to marry him, despite his good looks, and has her taken to the desert island where Giustino and Anastasio are shipwrecked. Giustino can rescue the Empress from a voracious sea monster. Together, they return to Byzantium, where Anastasio is already celebrating as the winner. Giustino has succeeded in overcoming Vitaliano and leads him to the Emperor. He should be imprisoned, but he manages to escape. Arianna gives Giustino a valuable belt for his exploits, which she herself once received from the emperor. When the jealous Emperor finds out about it through Amanzio, he lets Giustino be sentenced to death and breaks Arianna. Leocasta manages to free her beloved Giustino. Amanzio is now close to his goal to climb the throne. Giustino, on the other hand, is desperate. He begins to doubt Fortuna and falls asleep. That's how Vitaliano finds him, but an unearthly voice keeps him from killing Giustino. The two recognize that they are brothers and rush together to Byzantium, where they can barely prevent Amanzio's overthrow of the emperor from being executed. All's well, all's well: The Emperor returns to his throne and reconciles with Arianna. Giustino becomes a wife of Leocasta and is named co-regent. Fortuna's saying has come true.
