New production of the Theater an der Wien in the Chamber Opera

Sultan Bajazet, defeated by Tamerlano, is held in the palace of Bursa with his daughter Asteria. He asks the Greek prince Andronico, although he is an ally of Tamerlanos, to take care of his daughter. He knows that the two love each other. Asteria, however, is also coveted by Tamerlano, who would even be willing to break his engagement to Irene, the princess of Trapezunt, because of her. As compensation, he wants to marry Irene and Andronico and let them rule over the conquered Byzantium, not knowing what predicament he is putting his allies with. Not only does Irene, who has come to the palace incognito, flabbergasted when she learns of the insult, Bajazet does not want his daughter to be married to his enemy Tamerlano under any circumstances. Asteria, on the other hand, feels betrayed by Andronico, believing that her lover agrees with Tamerlano's plan. Nevertheless, she agrees to the wedding with Tamerlano, but only to be able to murder him at the next opportunity. When Bajazet learns from the desperate Andronico that his daughter is about to ascend the throne, Bajazet intervenes at the coronation ceremony and showered his daughter with abuse. To justify her, Asteria shows him her dagger, making her intentions public. Andronico confesses to Tamerlano that he and Asteria love each other. So humiliated, Tamerlano decides to kill Bajazet and let Asteria serve him as a slave in the future. However, this is the first opportunity to pour poison into his mug. This time, however, her plans are thwarted by Irene, who is now recognizable. Bajazet commits suicide in the face of impending humiliations that threaten his newly convicted daughter. Irene and Andronico ask Tamerlano for mercy for Asteria, who begs Tamerlano to kill her after the death of her father. Tamerlano, refined by the events and shaken by the course of events, ensures a reasonably happy ending: Andronico and Asteria are allowed to get married while he turns to Irene again.
