Promethean Fire

Promethean Fire by Paul Taylor
Lontano by Martin Schläpfer
Ramifications by Martin Schläpfer
Beaux by Mark Morris

With the premiere "Promethean Fire", the Vienna State Ballet presents two outstanding artists of American Modern Dance: Paul Taylor and Mark Morris.

Taylor's "Promethean Fire" is said to have been created as a direct reaction to the "Nine-Eleven" attacks. And if the choreographer later withdrew this specific association, there is still a catastrophic mood in the room: conflicts break out, emotions collide - in the end, however, hope wins in this moving dance drama.

Mark Morris, on the other hand, brings nine Beaux on stage with his wonderful humor: handsome men, real guys, but also buddies, cavaliers and innocent angels. At the same time, “Beaux” is also a lucid “music making with the body” that is extremely demanding in its lightness.

Martin Schläpfer responds to the powerful Modern Dance language of the two Americans with two miniatures: subtle studies of movement that shine in fine colors, dances like "the powder on the butterfly wings".

A ballet program that is located on the outer edges of the Prometheus motif, between hubris and humanity, catastrophe and beauty, creation and transience.
