La Cenerentola - Schedule, Program & Tickets

La Cenerentola

Opera by Gioacchino Rossini

In Italian with German surtitles

The story of Cinderella is well known: after the death of his wife, a man remarries, his daughter gets a stepmother. "The woman had two daughters, whom she brought into the house, and who were fair and white of face, but nasty and black of heart," as the Brothers Grimm say. "The marriage was scarcely over when the stepmother gave vent to her malice," writes Charles Perrault in his version. Jacopo Ferretti's libretto to Rossini's La Cenerentola is also based on Perrault's Cendrillon – as the fairy tale is called in the original. And yet a lot is different here: the fairytale elements are greatly reduced, instead of the stepmother, father Don Magnifico takes on the evil role in a great social satire that is bursting with opera buffa comedy and has a happy ending with the prince for Cinderella.

A quarter of a century ago, the legendary director Achim Freyer staged La Cenerentola at the Volksoper. His imaginative, witty and colorful version immediately became a hit with the public – and can now be seen again.
