Die Zauberflöte - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Die Zauberflöte

Opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

In German with English surtitles

Mozart's "The Magic Flute" is a collective cultural heritage and the most-performed opera of all. It combines magic fairy tales and educational novels, Masonic symbolism and the tradition of the Viennese suburban theater from the 18th century. It is enigmatic and contradictory, and that is its quality. At the Vienna Volksoper, Mozart's universal work is a fixed star in the repertoire.

But what is the work actually about? The musicologist Alfred Einstein already recognized that "every individual and every generation" finds something different in the work.

Henry Mason's production bears witness to this perpetual topicality: liberation from paternalism and old power structures, the struggle for self-determination, even saving the global climate find space in his version, which manages to prepare these themes in a fairytale-like, playful way for all generations.
