Die Lustige Witwe - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Die Lustige Witwe

In German with English surtitles

At the end of 1905, “Die lustige Witwe” celebrated its world premiere in the Theater an der Wien and thus began its triumphal march around the world: Performances in Hamburg and Berlin, in London and on Broadway soon followed. "The Merry Widow" is one of the most played operettas ever.

Hanna and Danilo became models for the great Hollywood lovers, for they were excitingly new: Hanna Glawari as a modern woman, equipped with a cheeky mouth and a directness that in no way contradicts her elegance and cosmopolitan character; Danilo as a man who, after losing his great love, spends his days in Maxim without perspective and task. Their play of luring and Vonsich-butting almost destroys the two proud fat skulls for a second time.

"The Merry Widow" was shown for the first time at the Volksoper on May 16, 1906 as a guest performance at the Theater an der Wien.
