Der fliegende Holländer - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Der fliegende Holländer

Opera by Richard Wagner
In German with German surtitles

Because he called the devil on a dangerous voyage around a cape, the Flying Dutchman is doomed to restless wandering and endless searching - unless he finds a woman whose unconditional loyalty brings him salvation from his undead existence. But he can only go ashore every seven years to find his soul mate ... In Riga, where Richard Wagner was employed as music director, he got to know the saga of the Flying Dutchman through Heinrich Heine's "Memoirs of the Lord von Schnabelewopski" and was enthusiastic about the romantic horror story. When he lost his job, he fled from his creditors. The ship got into a severe storm on its way to England. The trip inspired Wagner to the libretto and the composition of the "Flying Dutchman".
