Der Zigeunerbaron

In German with German surtitles

Cuddly waltzes and fiery Csárdás music on the one hand, glorification of war and racism on the other. "The Gypsy Baron" as a piece - especially painfully wrong when it comes to composition - has a hard time in today's world of theater. After several years of absence, "Der Zigeunerbaron" is now returning to the Volksoper Wien in a version by director and theater author Peter Lund.

A swampy landscape somewhere in the Habsburg-administered Banat around the year 1740. The multi-ethnic state unites large farmers and life artists here: the pig breeder Zsupán in the manor, next to it a group of gypsies under the matriarchy of the old Czipra. When Sándor Bárinkay, who grew up abroad, returns to the home of his ancestors, he demands the goods to which he is entitled, but at the same time declares himself to be a willing marriage candidate: a welcome oath for Zsupán. But a slit ear trumps the bigger one and no agreement can be reached. The beautiful and confident Saffi turns the tide, Bárinkay is declared the Baron of the Gypsies and love makes everything good. Wouldn't it be the "long arm of the monarchy", which, through Count Homonay, recruits soldiers in the Banat for an impending war ...

The world première of the “Gypsy Baron” in 1885 gave Johann Strauß the greatest stage success in his lifetime and the operetta repertoire a milestone in his musical wealth that has been captivating to this day.
