Sopro - Portuguese for breath - is about a theater that has passed away, but is brought back to life by the memory of a souffle lover. The latest play by playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues is based on anecdotes that Cristina Vidal collected during her 39 years as a souffle-maker at the Lisbon Teatro Nacional D.Maria II. Usually, she hides behind the actors, but now she's in the limelight for the first time, inviting her own memories. She acts somewhat reluctantly and makes no secret of the fact that she does not think much of this innovative directorial idea and follows the director's instructions purely out of loyalty to her theater. The piece, which consists of fragments of classical texts (by Racine, Chekhov or Sophocles) and stories of life behind the scenes, is driven by the desire to represent the invisible. Sopro is a moving homage to all people working in the theater background and to a vanishing profession. Summoning up the spirit of the theater, it lets one feel the warmth of a breath that is not tangible or fully controllable ... but always brings new life to memories.
