Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte

Concert performance in Italian

Girls, girls, girls: The notorious seducer Don Giovanni is in trouble right now in Seville and wants to be masked at night! - seduce the beautiful Donna Anna. She calls on her father, the Commander, who is murdered by Don Giovanni without further ado. The womanizer can escape unrecognized. The next meeting leads him to a lady already known to him: Donna Elvira. Once Don Giovanni had left her sitting in front of the altar and therefore he quickly escapes. The list of Don Giovanni's conquests is long, as his servant Leporello Donna Elvira announces. But Don Giovanni still has not enough. He is aware of the beautiful Zerlina and although it is her wedding day, she will give in to his seduction ... It all works, because Leporello, a reluctant, but yet faithful servant of his master is and actively supported him. He even exchanges the identity with him if necessary and almost risks his life. However, his disguise flies up, which he reports to his master in the cemetery at night. There is a voice - it is the tomb of the murdered commander. Mocking Don Giovanni invites the statue to eat and she agrees. Don Giovanni feels no fear. However, he is surprised when the statue really stands in front of his door and asks him to dine with her now. Don Giovanni considers it until the final handshake ... Don Giovanni was the second congenial collaboration between Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. The commission came from Pasquale Bondini, the impresario of the Gräflich Nostitz National Theater in Prague, where he had just successfully performed Mozart's Figaro with his troupe. Not as planned on October 14, but because of difficulties in studying until October 29, 1787, the acclaimed premiere took place. The lyrical text is musically perfectly interpreted by Mozart's music. Already in the famous overture a dramatic and passionate tone is heard, which makes Don Giovanni's gloomy soul look. To this day, E.T.A. Hoffmann quotes Don Giovanni as the "opera of all operas".
