The poet Hoffmann is sitting at his desk. The spirits of wine and beer appear and dissolve. Hoffmann's muse appears and swears that she wants to protect him from the dangers of love. She will turn into Nicklausse, a young student who is to accompany Hoffmann. City Councilor Lindorf intercepts Andreas, the emissary of the beautiful opera singer Stella, who performed in Don Giovanni that evening. Lindorf impresses Andreas, so that this leaves him to Hoffmann directed billet Stellas. The letter is a declaration of love to the poet and also contains the key to her wardrobe. The old but powerful Lindorf intends to take away Hoffmann's lover this evening.

The waiters are already preparing the tables in Luther's wine bar. Impetuous students call for wine, berate Luther, drink on Stella and wait impatiently for Hoffmann. Hoffmann appears with Nicklausse. He seems distressed, gloomy, melancholy, but the students urge him to sing the funny song of the dwarf Klein-Zack. During the song, his thoughts slip away and he suddenly describes a beautiful woman. The students bring him back to reality. The waiters inflame the punch. Hoffmann sees Lindorf and recognizes in him his rival and eternal adversary in luck and love. The students are captured by curiosity and want to hear from Hoffmann the name of his beloved. There are three, he answers: the girl Olympia, the artist Antonia and the courtesan Giulietta. The students decide not to return to the opera performance, but to smoke their pipes and hear Hoffmann's tales of his three loves.
