Like many of his fellow composers, Gaetano Donizetti tried to gain a foothold in Paris, the world capital of music at the time – and with success. His very first comedy, released in 1840 at the Opéra-Comique, quickly became one of the most sought-after pieces in the international repertoire: in addition to numerous »Schlager« the extremely demanding tenor aria with its eight high Cs (some performers even add an additional ninth a) enduring popularity. In the timeless and elegantly comical production by Laurent Pelly shown here, the cabaret-like speaking role of the Duchess of Crakentorp is also of particular importance, which will certainly receive even more attention thanks to Maria Happel's debut at the State Opera. On the other hand, there will be a reunion with the soprano Jane Archibald: the former member of the ensemble can now look back on an international career and will now sing her first Viennese Marie.
