The literary source for La Bohème, which premiered in Turin in 1896 under Arturo Toscanini, is a highly successful episodic novel by the French author Henri Murger. In this, the composer Giacomo Puccini rediscovered the atmosphere of his own, nostalgically transfigured years of study: »Here I found everything I seek and love: the originality, the youth, the passion, the humor, the secretly shed tears and love, the Bringing joys and sorrows. «Together with his librettists, he condensed the loose sequence of images of the original plot to a playing time of around two hours, designed sculptural character portraits of his youthful Parisian city heroes, which he also let act in musically precisely sketched social spaces, thus bringing all facets of the Material for sounding. The story of the terminally ill Mimì, who was able to experience the happiness of a great love in the midst of poverty and illness, soon became a perennial favorite on the international game boards. This is also the case in Vienna: the opera has now been performed in the Haus am Ring around a thousand times, making it one of the most successful works of all.

ACT 1
Christmas Eve in the poor attic, inhabited by four young artists, will hardly differ from other evenings: Marcello is working on a painting, Rodolfo, poet and writer, looks over the rooftops of Paris. They have no money, they are cold and yet they are in good spirits. A bundle of manuscripts only heats the stove for a moment. Colline, a philosopher by trade, comes home without having achieved anything - the pawnshop was closed. But the fourth, Schaunard, the musician, is more lucky. He says that nobody listens - the food you have brought with you promises a happy holiday. But Schaunard wants it differently - they go out on Christmas Eve. There is still danger: the homeowner knocks and demands the rent. A glass of wine and the friendliness of the artists let him stumble into the trap; With a wink he speaks of a love affair, reason enough for the friends to show him the door with well-acted moral indignation. Rodolfo stays to finish an article while the others go ahead to Café Momus. There is a knock: A young woman is outside, she wants to light the candle that has gone out. Tormented by a cough, she collapses. Then, grateful for the help given, she wants to go again; But the key to the apartment was lost, not entirely by chance, and the draft has turned all the lights out. The hands are found in the darkness. She is called Mimì, lets her know that she is embroidering flowers ... Outside the friends are calling.

ACT 2
The student district of Paris offers a colorful picture. Crowds of people roam the streets. Rodolfo buys his Mimì a bonnet and invites her to Café Momus, introduces her to his friends and is delighted by their admiration. Only Marcello has sorrow and his sorrow has a name: Musetta. She appears at the side of an old and rich beau with the firm intention of pulling out all the stops of the art of seduction. Marcello is not up to this publicly presented onslaught and an old, great love is freshly puttied.
ACT 3
A cloudy February morning at the customs barrier that separates a Paris suburb from the city center. Workers, carters and milk women are let through, pass the bar, which is adorned with a half-finished picture of Marcello. The wind seems to be blowing Musetta's voice over. It's cold, Mimì had an argument with Rodolfo, Marcello is supposed to mediate. Rodolfo seems to be fleeing, she doesn't know why. Marcello also has no idea the real reasons; Rodolfo discovers it for him: Mimì is terminally ill, she only has a short time to live and he cannot bear to see her suffer. He has to endure even more: Mimì overheard her death sentence, a coughing fit reveals her presence. And Rodolfo's love succeeds in the hardest: to alleviate despair, to bring calm to the tormented heart. Strange contrast: Marcello and Musetta. Your love seems to seek conflict.
ACT 4
Three or four months have passed. Marcello and Rodolfo have lost their lovers. They sit thoughtfully at work. Where is Musetta, where is Mimì? Can the carefree days of yore be repeated?
